During the decade before World War Two, the last vestiges of the world's ancient mysticisms were nearly extinguished, as Nazi agents systematically sought them out.  What they could not capture and collect, they destroyed.  Only one man stood in their way...a second-rate stage performer who was known (if he was known at all) as Doctor Wizardo, "Master of The Mystic Arts."  Although originally nothing more than an enthusiastic entertainer interested in dressing his act in the trappings and talismans of sorcery, he soon realized that such items were not just real, but in danger.  He wasn't a traditional hero (in fact, he was something of a blowhard coward), but the survival of magic, and, perhaps, of mankind, once depended on this parlor-trick magician in a tuxedo and hooded cape.
